Dermatology is the branch of medicine focused on the skin, hair, and nails, encompassing both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist is a specialist trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of skin conditions, as well as address cosmetic concerns related to the skin, scalp, hair, and nails.

At Central Alberta Dermatology, our team is highly skilled in diagnosing and treating a variety of conditions affecting the hair, skin, and nails. This includes common issues such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, dermatitis, and hair loss, as well as suspicious moles and other skin abnormalities. We specialize in skin cancer diagnosis through Total Body Skin Exams (TBSEs) and offer treatments like surgical excisions. Whether you have a chronic skin condition, a suspicious mole, or are seeking cosmetic enhancements, our trusted experts are here to help.

In most cases, a referral is required by Alberta Health Authority to schedule an appointment with our Dermatologist. However, as cosmetic treatments are elective, our cosmetic wing does not require a referral. We welcome you to call today to book your initial consultation for your customized treatment plan.

Medical Dermatology

There is no cure, but treatments can effectively control symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

Psoriasis and Eczema both cause inflamed skin, but they are different conditions. A dermatologist can provide a clear diagnosis.

Melanoma is a potentially dangerous type of skin cancer. Although it is diagnosed less frequently than other forms of skin cancer, such as non-melanoma skin cancers, melanoma can spread rapidly. While it most commonly begins on the skin, melanoma can also develop in other parts of the body, including under fingernails, toenails, and even in the eye.

Yes. In Alberta, patients require a referral from a family physician to see a dermatologist.

The most common early symptom of melanoma is a change in an existing mole. Additionally, the appearance of a new, suspicious mole can also be a warning sign. Learning to distinguish between a normal mole and an abnormal one is crucial for performing self-skin exams at home. The ABCDEs of skin cancer can guide you in identifying moles that may require further evaluation by a dermatologist.

Biologic medications are highly effective for many patients, but they require medical supervision and regular monitoring.

  • A (Asymmetry): When one half of a mole or mark differs from the other half.
  • B (Border): The edges of the mole or mark are scalloped, uneven, notched, or irregular.
  • C (Color): The mole or mark has varying colors or shades, including different shades of the same color, or it may include colors like pink, red, or white within a predominantly brown or black spot.
  • D (Diameter): A mole or mark larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser) could be a melanoma, though melanoma can be smaller than 6 mm.
  • E (Evolving): The mole or mark is changing in size, shape, color, or texture.

If you observe any of these warning signs, it’s important to schedule an appointment with one of our dermatologists immediately. Please note that not all melanomas exhibit these warning signs.

Most adults benefit from a yearly screening. If you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, your dermatologist may recommend more frequent checks.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a type of skin cancer that originates in the basal cells, which are responsible for producing new skin cells as old ones die off. BCC often appears as a waxy bump but can take other forms as well. It typically occurs on areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face and neck. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight is the primary cause of most BCC cases. Protecting your skin by avoiding excessive sun exposure and using sunscreen can help reduce the risk of developing BCC.

A small biopsy may be taken and sent to a lab for testing. If cancer is confirmed, your dermatologist will discuss treatment options right away.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common type of skin cancer that develops in the thin, flat squamous cells making up the outer layer of the skin. While SCC is usually not life-threatening, it can be aggressive in some cases. If left untreated, SCC can grow large or spread to other parts of the body, leading to serious complications. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, whether from sunlight or tanning beds/lamps, is the leading cause of SCC. Limiting UV exposure is key to reducing your risk of SCC and other skin cancers.

Yes. Monthly self-checks help you spot changes early. Use mirrors or ask a family member to help examine hard-to-see areas.

While there is no cure for Rosacea, treatments can effectively control symptoms, reduce flare-ups, and significantly improve the appearance of the skin. Consistent management is key.
